Georgia lose to Portugal in Euro 2024 opener

Despite a spirited performance, Georgia were unable to get a result against Portugal in their opening match of Euro 2024.

Portugal took the lead in the first half through a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty. Georgia equalised in the second half through a goal from Giorgi Kvilitaia, but Portugal regained the lead in the 80th minute through a Joao Moutinho strike.

Georgia had a number of chances to equalise late on, but they were unable to find a way past the Portugal defence. The defeat leaves Georgia bottom of Group B after the first matchday.

Georgia will now face Switzerland in their next match on Friday. Portugal will face the Czech Republic.

Across the first two matchdays of EURO 2024 Georgia faced more shots (49), more shots on target (20) and had a higher xG against figure than any other team.
